Summer 2026 Sermon Series: Practising the Way
What does it mean to become like Jesus and do what he did, as we follow him? We used themes from John Mark Comer's book, Practising the Way, to help us think this through during the early summer of 2026.
7th June 2026: Practising the Way 1: Apprenticeship
Matthew 4: 18-22
Revd Abby starts the new sermon series thinking about what it means to be a disicple - or apprentice - of Jesus. What tools do we need and how should we use them as we spend time with Jesus, learning from him and becoming more like him?
14th June 2026: Practising the Way 2: Prayer
1 Thessalonians 4:10b–12
Mark 1:35–39
Jane Williams looks at the story of Jesus taking himself away from the crowds and spending time with his Father. What can we learn from his example about prayer and how can we take his example and let it speak into our own daily lives?
21st June 2026: Practising the Way 3: Healing
James 5:13–16
Mark 5:21-34
Revd Mary considers the story of Jesus healing the woman who had bled for 12 years and asks how he did more than physically heal her illness. On Father's Day, what does it mean for him to call her daughter and what does that mean for us?
28th June 2026: Practising the Way 4: Transformation
Colossians 1: 21-28
Luke 6: 36-40
Revd Abby looks at what Jesus says about his followers becoming like him and thinks about the lifetime of transformation that he offers as we let him change us. What does that life's pilgrimage journey with Jesus look like for each of us?
5th July 2026: Practising the Way 5: Sabbath Rest
Genesis 2:1–3
Mark 2:23–28
Jo Cleary thinks about the importance of rest and spending time with God. How are we taking Sabbath rest seriously in our own journeys and are we making space in the midst of the busyness?
19th July 2026: Practising the Way 7: The rule of life
Colossians 2: 6–7
John 15: 1–11
Revd Mary considers how Jesus called us to remain rooted in his love so that we can remain fruitful. How do we actively stayed rooted in him and continue to go deeper in our relationship with him? And how will this make a difference?
12th July 2026: Practising the Way 6: Do what Jesus did
1 Peter 2: 21-25
Luke 4: 16-21
Revd Abby looks at how Jesus presented himself at the synagogue in Nazareth and declared the prophecies from Isaiah to be fulfilled as he started his ministry. What was saying he was here to do and how can we follow his example today?
